Sea fish farms with production of more than 20 tons per year in France must obtain two operating licences: (i) one for Sea Farming (AECM), with the aim of ensuring that the granted site and use of the maritime public domain for exploitation will respect all restrictions of general interest; (ii) one for regulating Facilities Classified for the Protection of the Environment (ICPE). Although the first one requires a relatively simple licence request file, the second one demands a very complete file, which includes, beyond the notice of exploitation information, a complete impact study, as well as a hazards study and a health and safety notice. In this context, petitioners in Corsica (adjustment of status or new exploitation) are faced with the same... |

An initial surveillance system of Ostreopsis ovata was set Lip along the Mediterranean coast in the summer of 2007. To Strengthen and adapt this system, we reviewed the information available for a health risk assessment of this monocellular species of algae that produces palytoxin and is increasingly observed in the Mediterranean Sea. Since 2002, this species has been reported to be responsible for many human cases of irritation, Cough, fever and respiratory problems in Europe. It is not Currently possible to determine if palytoxin causes these health effects, which follow aerosol inhalation. Ingestion of contaminated seafood may lead to very serious poisoning, but no such case has yet been described in Europe. A "dose-response' relation cannot be... |

Marine pollution is one of the priority issues of the Mediterranean environment. This pollution comes from multiple sources including large coastal cities which are considered as hot-spots. The METROC project objective is to assess gross and net chemical contaminant flows related to large Mediterranean coastal cities, with a first application to the Marseilles area. The methodology consists of i) assessing the present state of the chemical contamination of the coastal environment; ii) assessing inputs to the sea from sewage, small rivers and storm water run-off; and iii) modelling the fate of some key contaminants, in order to attempt to establish a balance between inputs and exports towards the open sea. This short article presents a synthesis on these... |

Developed in France by IFREMER and COMEX, SAGA is the first prototype of a new generation of industrial submarines capable of carrying out underwater operations using divers or robots at close proximity to the work site without surface assistance. SAGA (28 meters long, 550 tons submerged displacement, 6 crew members) has a hyperbaric compartment for 4 to 6 divers. Several important innovations, in particular with regards to energy, give SAGA an exceptional autonomy, essential for performing deep underwater operations. The submarine was launched in October 1987 and has just completed to three-year qualification programme. Since May 1990 SAGA holds the world record of the deepest (-317 m) diver lock-out operation from a submarine. This paper presents the new... |
